840.37 hectare units were sold with the average multiplier of 2.1 mirroring the previous sale whilst the top multiplier was 2.4. This is based on the standard Euro conversion rate of 0.9093. In all 24 lots were sold with the highest Euro value of €623.14 and the lowest Euro value of €4.63.
In all, 35 bidders were logged on to ANM Group’s eBid@liveauction system which allows interaction with a live auction sale via computer.
John Gregor, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ general manager said: “The eBid system came to the fore again with a good number of bidders logged on and a number of lots purchased via the system. Of the 24 lots sold, 21 were bought via eBid.
“Over 2500 units forward were of low Euro value which seemed to lack demand today. Higher value lots were more sought after.”

New Sponsor For Spring Show Pedigree Cattle
Aberdeen & Northern Marts have announced a new sponsor for the multibreed show and sale of pedigree cattle at the Royal Northern Spring Show on February 24.
AMC, the Agricultural Mortgage Corporation, will sponsor the event which last year saw three Centre sale records smashed.
The Royal Northern Spring Show is one of the most prestigious dates on the Scottish agricultural calendar and the pedigree cattle section regularly sees excellent entries. In 2009, the top price attained was 8,600gn for a Charolais bull whilst Limousin and Simmental records were also broken. The show is held under the auspices of the British Charolais, Limousin, Simmental and Aberdeen Angus Societies and the judge will be Matthew Milne, Kennieshillock, Lhanbryde, Elgin.
John Gregor, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ general manager said: “We are delighted AMC have agreed to sponsor the highly regarded pedigree cattle show and sale at the Spring Show. With the success of last year’s event, coupled with the support from AMC, we are hopeful that we can build upon those achievements and continue to expand the show and sale.
“The support from breeders across the North and North east for this type of show and sale event is strong and we will continue to work with breeders to build upon pedigree events at Thainstone, such as our well-received new autumn bull sale date.”
Dugald Hamilton, AMC's Regional Agricultural Manager for Scotland said: “Many farmers are investing in their businesses for the long term and our support for the livestock sector especially in Scotland is demonstrated through the wide range of projects for which we have provided finance.
“Events such as the Royal Northern Spring Show Bull Sale are important economic and social events within the farming community and AMC are pleased to underline our involvement in both through our sponsorship of this event.”
Exceptional Trade At Thainstone 20th Anniversary Show And Sale
20 years of Thainstone Centre were celebrated in style last Friday (January 15) with 1,900 cattle sold and ‘exceptional’ prices obtained.
The show and sale event, which had been postponed by a week due to weather, was sponsored by local hauliers, Thomson of Sauchen. Taking the championship in the show was Andrew Anderson of Smallburn Farms, Elgin. Judge Tom Stevenson of Balmacolly Farm, Bankfoot, Perth, chose a 572kg Limousin cross steer as overall and home bred champion. Mr Stevenson went on to buy the champion for £1,380.
The reserve also came from Mr Anderson and was a 698kg British Blue cross heifer which sold for £1,450 again to the judge.
John Gregor, Aberdeen & Northern Marts general manager, presented the judge, champion exhibtor and sponsor, Eric Thomson, with commemorative Thainstone Whisky to mark the occasion.
Mr Gregor commented: “After delaying the sale by a week due to the bad weather, we more than made up for it with an excellent show and sale event. The quality of the entry, much of which was in forward condition, was excellent and prices certainly reflected this.
“I must thank our sponsors, Thomson of Sauchen for their continued support: they have sponsored this event since it began and have been excellent supporters of Aberdeen & Northern Marts over the years.”
1,099 bullocks were sold averaging 183.3p and sold to 253.2p per kg and £1,265 gross. 762 heifers averaged 174.6p and sold to 259.3p per kg and £1,400 gross, 39 bulls averaged 181.9p and sold to 220.1p per kg and £1,060 gross and five young calves averaged £145 and sold to £185 gross.

A total of 892.48 units were traded of 1374.95 forward. As well as a good turnout of buyers at the Centre, some 37 bidders were logged on using ANM Group’s eBid@liveauction online bidding system. John Gregor, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ general manager said: “As the first sale of SFP Entitlements this year, this sale always attracts national interest and we were pleased with the trade which saw good interest in both high and low value lots.”
The next sale of SFP entitlements will be held on Friday January 29 and entries close on Monday January 25. For further details, or to discuss buying or selling Entitlements, contact Alan Donald on (01467) 623753.

Excellent Entry Of Cattle Forward For Delayed Anniversary Sale
Aberdeen & Northern Marts will celebrate 20 years since the opening of Thainstone Centre at the Anniversary Show and Sale of store cattle tomorrow (Friday January 15th) where an outstanding entry of over 2,000 cattle will be forward.
The annual show and sale was due to be held last Friday (January 8th) but due to the adverse weather was postponed.
John Gregor, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ general manager said: “Whilst our show and sale has been delayed a week, we have a tremendous entry of 2,000 with a large proportion forward conditioned cattle.
“Our excellent overnight lairage facilities, which were recently extended and upgraded have really come into their own this week. This has allowed farmers to move livestock into the Centre ahead of the sale and made it easier to cope with the difficulties caused on farm by the bad weather.”
Sponsors will once again be hauliers Thomson of Sauchen who have supported this event from the start and this year, have increased their sponsorship to £1,000 re-affirming their commitment to the event and the business they conduct through Thainstone Centre.
Classes for singles, pairs and pens of four will be contested with the exhibitor of the champion animal taking home the Perpetual Trophy and a cash prize of £100. Further cash prizes are available for the exhibitor of the overall reserve champion and the consignor of the home-bred champion.
The Centre, which opened in January, 1990, is recognised as one of the most modern auction complexes in Europe and has seen additional investment over the years. In addition to serving the North-East area, a major part of the business at Thainstone is the marketing of livestock from the North of Scotland and the Northern Isles. This was reinforced recently with the opening of additional overnight cattle lairage including dedicated bull facilities, to ensure livestock travelling long distances are well catered for.
Thainstone Centre Celebrates 20 Years
Scotland’s leading home of livestock sales, Thainstone Centre, celebrates its 20th anniversary this week.
The farming community defied the adverse weather conditions on Friday (January 8) when, despite the extreme cold, a surprising number of buyers and sellers attend the weekly sales at Thainstone which saw 385 store cattle and 758 store lambs and feeding ewes sold.
Sheep prices broke records with feeding ewes selling to a top of £172.50 and averaging £95 for the 555 sold.
The Anniversary Show and Sale, due to be held on Friday (January 8) was postponed due to the weather. The Show and Sale event, sponsored by hauliers Thomson of Sauchen, will now go ahead next Friday (January 15).
The purpose built Inverurie facility saw its first sale on January 3 1990 and immediately became the leading Scottish auction centre, this status being cemented over the succeeding 20 years.
Opened by then Secretary of State for Scotland, Malcolm Rifkind, Thainstone was quickly marked out by those on both sides of the livestock trading fence as the place to buy or sell cattle or sheep.
Whilst its conception was surrounded by concerns due to the resulting closure of a number of local marts, the Centre quickly became an integral part of the Scottish livestock scene, something few can now imagine life without.
The weekly sales at Thainstone Centre are more than just the bread and butter business of Aberdeen & Northern Marts – the auction system provides the price determining mechanism for farmers across the North and North east in the transfer of stock from breeders to finishers as well as channeling prime stock to slaughter.
Over the last 20 years, some 1.9million cattle and a staggering 6.9million sheep have been traded at Thainstone with a total of value of £1.25billion.
Thainstone is well recognised as a lead Centre for store sales across the country, handling large numbers of all classes of stock from across Scotland. Exemplified by the store sale record on April 29 2005 when 3,042 store cattle were sold.
Reflecting the commitment to farmers from across Scotland including the Highlands and Islands, extensive lairage facilities are a crucial part of the service at the Centre. These facilities have been regularly upgraded and extended over the last two decades.
The Centre has seen the bad times as well as the good and anyone who saw the disease outbreaks of BSE and Foot and Mouth will confirm that. Innovation is a key factor of the business, typified in 2001, when Aberdeen & Northern Marts traded their way out of the difficult situation the Foot and Mouth outbreak posed with the pioneering introduction of video auction sales.
Enforced by the temporary ban on live auctions under the disease restrictions, a record-breaking video sale at the Centre took place on May 4, 2001 when an incredible 4,082 store cattle were traded in a six and a half hour sale – with no livestock on site, the entire sale was conducted with videos of cattle forward shown on screen in the auction ring and buyers packing the ringside at Thainstone whilst there were electronic links to Elgin Auction Centre, Shetland Auction Mart and Caithness Livestock Centre.
Away from the livestock business, the Centre is home to ANM Group head office while the concourse has a number of varied tenants which make Thainstone a one-stop trade centre for the agricultural industry.
Saturday Machinery Sales are held eight times through the year with five auctioneers selling items as varied as farm machinery, building and industrial equipment and commercial vehicles. These sales regularly see around 5,000 lots traded often with 3,000 registered bidders onsite.
The site itself can take on chameleon-like properties and every week the livestock auctions make way for the ever-popular Sunday Market which sees private individuals and traders sell all manner of goods at indoor and outdoor stalls.
In 2004, as part of the ongoing investment at the Centre, Thainstone Exchange was unveiled as the North east’s multi purpose conference and exhibition hall. This specially designed facility of the Centre is in full use on a Sunday and sees two car auctions take place every week and, at the larger livestock events, provides excellent exhibition facilities for events such as the Christmas Classic, Spectacular and the Spring Show. However, such is the versatility of the Exchange that black tie dinners and party nights regularly cater for up to 500 diners.
Every February the Royal Northern Spring Show is hosted at the site and this prestigious event regularly attracts a visit from a Royal patron as well as several thousand members of the general public.
In terms of visitors to the site in a single day, one event stands head and shoulders above the rest: the annual Taste of Grampian food festival. With crowds in excess of 14,000 reported, the event sees celebrity chefs show off their skills and local food producers show off their wares.
Whilst there is a great breadth of activity at the Centre, Thainstone remains true to its core business of livestock auctions reflecting the interests of the uniquely structured farmers’ co-operative.
Thainstone Centre was built to do a job – to serve the needs of the Scottish livestock industry and, 20 years into its life, it’s certainly done that.
20th Anniversary Show And Sale Rescheduled
While the weekly sales of store cattle and sheep is planned to go ahead, the Anniversary Show and Sale, scheduled to be held at Thainstone Centre on Friday (January 8), has been postponed due to the adverse weather conditions.
The event is now expected to be held on Friday January 15. Sponsors of the show will be hauliers Thomson of Sauchen.
John Gregor, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ general manager said: “With the heavy snowfall we had to take the decision to postpone this event as many of the consignments entered were from outlying areas.
“However, we have had many enquiries from farmers keen to sell stock and since we have not held a weekly store sale since mid-December a sale will go ahead on Friday. We expect a reduced entry of around 600 store cattle and 800 sheep full details of which can be seen in our weekly advert.
“Our extensive lairage facilities on site will allow consignments to be brought in ahead of the sale if required and may assist buyers if the adverse weather conditions prevail.”
The Anniversary event will celebrate the opening of Thainstone Centre where operations began in January 1990.
Anniversary Sale Celebrates 20 Years Of Thainstone Centre
Aberdeen & Northern Marts will celebrate 20 years since the opening of Thainstone Centre at the Anniversary Show and Sale of store cattle on Friday January 8th.
This annual event is set to be as popular as ever and already over 1,200 entered with entries closing on Wednesday 6th. This number is expected to rise before the closing date.
Sponsors will once again be hauliers Thomson of Sauchen who have supported this event from the start and this year, have increased their sponsorship to £1,000 re-affirming their commitment to the event and the business they do through Thainstone Centre.
This was reinforced recently with the opening of additional overnight cattle lairage including dedicated bull facilities, to ensure livestock travelling long distances are well catered for.
John Gregor, Aberdeen & Northern Marts general manager said: "Thainstone Centre has been such an important part of Scotland's farming industry. Since opening in 1990, it has become a focus for North east agriculture and the Scottish livestock industry. The anniversary sale should be an excellent celebration of the core livestock auction business at the Centre as well as being the first sale of the year.
The support from buyers and sellers at Thainstone is excellent and the dedicated staff, who drive the business, are a real testament to the company and I'm looking forward to the continued further development and success of the Centre".
