The show and sale of commercial beef breeding cattle, sponsored by East Coast Viners, was held at Thainstone on Wednesday (May 6).
Overall champion was an April 2006 born Limousin cross heifer with March 2009 born Limousin cross bull calf at foot from Angus Greenlaw, Sheep Park Farms, Bridge of Marnoch, Huntly. It sold for £2,700 to O Llyr, Tyn-y-Wern, Ruthin, North Wales.
The reserve came from Keith Stewart & Sons, Greenhaugh, Huntly. The April 2006 born Limousin cross with February 2009 born Limousin cross bull calf at foot sold for £3,100.
Outwith the championship the record price for a heifer with calf at foot was broken.
Attaining the top price of £6,000 was an April 2005 born Charolais cross heifer with September 2008 born pure Limousin bull calf from Harry Emslie jnr, Kinknockie Farm, Mintlaw, Peterhead. It was bought by TT Farming, Yorkshire.
The calf was born by embryo transfer by a recipient mother and is one of 100 animals Mr Emslie breeds in this way each year. The bull calf is pure Limousin, the dame being “Tess” and the sire “Sammy”, a former interbreed champion at the Royal Highland Show.
The mother of the dam is rated as the number two cow in the UK for milk and growth figures.
The Simmental special prize went to Ivan Keith with a November 2006 born Simmental cross with February 2009 Limousin cross bull calf and they sold for £2,600 to DG Kennedy, Tresdale, Canisbray, Wick.
John Angus, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ breeding and store cattle manager said: “This annual spring show and sale had an outstanding entry of top quality animals from leading consignors and strong prices were attained on the day including a tremendous record price.”
