Excellent Show Of Cattle At Young Farmers’ Contest
Judges Donald Morrison and John Lumgair faced a tough task at the Young Farmers’ Overwintered Cattle show at Thainstone Centre on Thursday (March 19). The sale of the animals was held on Friday (March 20) and the event was sponsored by Johnston Carmichael.
Overall champion was a 452kg April 2008 born Charolais cross heifer from Paul Wilson, Wester Cairnglass, Gollanfield, Ardersier. Paul is a member of the Nairn Young Farmers club. The animal was bred by Smallburn Farms.
In the sale, this animal attained a record price for an animal sold at the Young Farmers’ Overwintered contest selling for £4,000 to AJ Forsyth, Mid Bishopton, Whithorn. Mr Forsyth plans to show the animal at the Royal Highland Show in June.
The home bred champion went to a 376kg, April 2008 born Limousin cross heifer from Belhelvie club member Aileen Ritchie, Tamala, Burnside, Whitecairns. It sold for £1,700 to Angus Cumming, Tillydesk, Ellon. Aileen also won the best paraded animal award for a March 2008 born 442kg Limousin cross steer.
The champion steer went to Ally Fraser, Easter Clune, Lethen, Nairn with an April 2008 born Limousin cross steer scaling 492kg. It sold for £1,020 to D&V Buchan, Savoch, Longside. Ally is a member of Nairn Young Farmers.
Donald Morrison of Cairn Nulla, Burnside, Kinlochbervie, judged the classes and the championship and was pleased with the entry forward. He commented: “The quality at the top end was very good and it was pleasing to see the young handlers so enthusiastic. I was delighted to see so many young handlers here for the first time too.”
John Lumgair, Gask Farm, Letham, Forfar, judged the best presented and paraded animal. Graham Leith of sponsors Johnston Carmichael, chartered accountants and business advisers, was on hand to present awards and said: “Once again, we were delighted to be involved in the young farmers’ contest. The entries on show were of an excellent standard and it’s great to see so many young farmers, the future of farming, interested in events such as these.”

A total of 2,545 units were offered for sale and 569.6 of these did not meet reserve and will be available for sale by private treaty early next week.
John Gregor, Aberdeen & Northern Marts general manager said: “The sale today saw more cautious bidding which may be as a result of recent suggestions that the single farm payment system may be reviewed before 2013.”
For further information about lots available for sale by private treaty, contact Alan Donald on (01467) 623753 or email alan.donald@goanm.co.uk.

This was the first time National Reserve Entitlements have been sold at Thainstone following a change in regulations due to the Common Agricultural Policy Health Check.
National Reserve Entitlements sold to 3.1 times their Euro value for nine high value units of 2448 Euros. Standard entitlements peaked at 3.4 times for 515 units of 3.73 Euros value. The average overall multiplier was 2.8 at the standard conversion rate of 0.7903.
The next sale of Entitlements will be the final one of this season and will be held next Friday, March 20. The closing date for entries is this Monday, March 16.
Young Farmers Contest Draws To A Close
Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ annual young farmers overwintered cattle competition reaches its conclusion on Thursday and Friday, March 19 and 20.
Entrants will show their cattle on the evening of Thursday 19 before the sale on Friday 20. The event is sponsored by Johnston Carmichael, chartered accountants and business advisers and has attracted around 70 entries.
The contest offers young farmers the opportunity to gain experience in the selection and preparation of cattle for show and sale and also the business skills required to run a successful beef finishing enterprise.
A number of prizes are on offer including the best commercial overwintered animal, outwith the champions: the winner of this award is decided by a points system which factors in liveweight gain, presentation, gross margin and overall quality of the animal.
The show will begin at 6pm in the Thainstone Exchange on Thursday March 19 and the judge will be Donald Morrison, Cairn Nulla, Burnside, Kinlochbervie. Handler judge will be John Lumgair, Gask, Forfar.
The sale of the animals will begin at 10am on Friday March 20.
John Angus, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ breeding and store cattle manager said: “Once again this looks set to be an excellent contest and I’m sure the standard of entries will be as high as ever. The quality of entries has traditionally attracted a large turnout of buyers and I’m sure this year will be no exception. Previously, we have seen cattle from this sale go on to great successes in further showing”.
Alex Rennie, lead agricultural partner with Johnston Carmichael added: “I am delighted that this event is being so well supported, and that so many highly talented young people have chosen to take part.
“Johnston Carmichael has taken care of the accounting and advisory needs of generations of farmers here in the North-east so I am especially pleased to see that our potential future clients are clearly well on the road to acquiring the range of skills that they’ll need to keep this region at the forefront of Scottish agriculture.”
Three Records Smashed At Thainstone
Three sale records were broken at Thainstone Centre on Wednesday (February 25) at the Royal Northern Spring Show.
Aberdeen & Northern Marts held a sale of bulls which saw prices in the Charolais, Limousin and Simmental classes all exceed previous records. The Charolais price also claimed the Centre record price for bulls.
With a price of 8,600gn, the top price exceeded 2008’s record of 8,500gn. The animal “Kinclune Commando” was exhibited by John Wilson and sons, Kinclune, Glenkindie and was bought by G McBain of Ardlewie, Cabrach, Huntly.
This is the fourth consecutive year Mr Wilson has exhibited the top priced animal at the Spring Show and this year’s animal is an April 2007 Charolais sired by Caylers Solomon, the same animal that sired the 2008 sale leader. The dam, Kinclune Lana, is the grand dam of Goldies Champion which sold at Perth in 2008 for 38,000gn.
Meanwhile, an April 2007 born Limousin, exhibited by Messrs C&E Ogg broke the previous Limousin record attaining a price of 6,200gn and a Simmental from Stewart Stronach, Berryleys, Grange, Keith reached 5,200gn.
The show was sponsored by Clydesdale Bank, held under the auspices of the British Charolais, Limousin, Simmental and Aberdeen-Angus Cattle societies.
Alan Hutcheon, Aberdeen & Northern Marts deputy general manager commented: “To have three record prices broken in one day is an excellent achievement and shows that the quality of animals on offer at Thainstone is what buyers are looking for.
In the exhibition cattle, the supreme champion came from Paul and Ian Wilson of Wester Cairnglass, Gollanfield, Inverness with a 478kg April 2008 born Limousin cross steer sired by Middledale Toronto. The animal, named Bob, was bought for £3,700 by Bert Paton of Spott, Glenprosen, Kirriemuir.
Reserve champion was a 426kg April 2008 born Limousin Cross steer from Donald Morrison, Cairn Nulla, Burnside, Kinlochbervie.
Mr Morrison also won the heifer championship with a 562kg February 2008 born Limousin Cross.
Reserve heifer champion was a 416kg March 2008 born Limousin Cross from Roy Milne and sons of Kennieshillock, Lhanbryde, Elgin. It sold for £2,600 to S&SM Brown, Roepark, Little Brechin, Brechin.
