Excellent Selection Of Pedigree And Exhibition Cattle For Spring Show
Aberdeen & Northern Marts will hold two of the most important sales of pedigree and exhibition cattle on the calendar when over 110 pedigree animals will be entered at the Royal Northern Spring Show on Wednesday February 25.
A prestigious event, the Spring Show, held at Thainstone Centre, will also include a major show of exhibition cattle with 70 exhibition cattle entered. Many of these animals will be suitable for further showing at summer and Christmas shows such as the Thainstone Spectacular and the Aberdeen Christmas Classic.
66 pedigree bulls, comprising 21 Charolais, 22 Limousin, 16 Simmental, 6 Aberdeen Angus and 1 Blonde d’Aquitaine from leading North east herds will be offered for sale at the event. The show of these animals will take place at 8.30am and the sale at 11am, commencing with the presentation of trophies.
The sale, sponsored by Clydesdale Bank, will be held under the auspices of the British Charolais, Limousin, Simmental and Aberdeen-Angus cattle societies.
The show of bulls will be judged by Mr J Nicol of Todpark Farm, Alyth, Blairgowrie.
The show of 70 exhibition haltered cattle will be held at 11am. 50 of these will be offered for sale by auction and this sale will commence at 2pm, again commencing with the presentation of trophies. Judge for the show will be Ewan Fettes, Braes of Enzie, Clochan, Buckie.
At 12.30pm, a dispersal sale of 47 pedigree Simmental cattle from Tillylair Farms, Lumphanan will be held. This will comprise 14 cows with calves at foot, 9 maiden heifers and 10 cows PD in calf to a Simmental bull.
Alan Hutcheon, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ deputy general manager commented: “We will have an excellent selection of pedigree bulls and cattle and exhibition cattle forward and are hopeful there will be a good turnout of buyers."
The overall champion bull of the 2008 show was Dumbreck Braveheart, a March 2006 born Limousin from D Work & Son, Dumbreck, Udny, Ellon. It attained a price of 4,900gn. At the 2008 event a record price for a bull sold at the Spring Show was achieved when the March 2006 born Charolais, Kinclune Barker, from John Wilson, Kinclune, Glenkindie, sold for 8,500gn.
Supreme champion in the exhibition cattle section at the 2008 event was a Belgian Blue cross steer from Bert and Patsy Paton of Spott, Glenprosen, Kirriemuir which sold for £2,000. Top price was £2,900 for a Limousin cross heifer from Ian and Paul Wilson, Wester Cainrnglass, Gollanfield, Inverness.
SFP Sale Success
There was once again strong trade at Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ sale of Single Farm Payment entitlements on Friday February 13 with values little changed from the previous week’s auction.
The overall multiplier, at the standard conversion rate of 0.7903 euros was 2.8 with one lot making 3.1.
In all, 446.49 standard units were sold and two set aside lots were also sold and as well as attending the sale in person, bidders also utilised the eBid@liveauction remote online bidding system.
Commenting on the sale, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ deputy general manager Alan Hutcheon said: “Once again there was good trade and higher value lots were in demand.”
The next sale of Single Farm Payment entitlements will be held on Friday February 27 at Thainstone Centre.

Busy Saturday Sale Defies Credit Crunch
Aberdeen & Northern Marts held their first Saturday sale of 2009 on January 31 and saw excellent trading with bidders keen to buy lots from all categories.
A large selection of 4x4s, commercial vehicles and farm machinery were forward and trade amongst these items was strong.
Top price on the day was £15,200 for a 2001, Fermec 860 four wheel drive excavator. Other notable lots from the tractors and plant section included an R-reg Manitou articulated telescopic handler which realised £8,800, an N-reg JCB 526 farm special telescopic handler at £8,500 and an R-reg New Holland 4835 two wheel drive tractor with loader which made £8,000. A Massey Ferguson 860 four wheel drive excavator made £7,700 and an L-reg Case 895 stockman fourwheel drive tractor £6,400.
A 2002 Landrover 110 Defender, TD5 with Slytone 14.5m hoist made the top price in the light commercials and 4x4s section, realising £12,000. A 2004 Land Rover 90 Defender County made £10,100, a 2006 Mitsubishi L200 4Life doublecab pick-up £7,400 and a 2005 Mitsubishi L200 4Life pickup £4,800.
Heavy commercials were topped by a 2003 Man 7.5 tonne 4x2 tipper at £5,700. A 2000 Man M2000 4x2 platform realised £4,800 and two 2000 Iveco Cargo 4x2 road sweepers made £4,700 and £4,200 a piece.
Other notable lots included a Stewart 28 foot aluminium twin axle livestock trailer at £6,200, a Triaxle turntable drag trailer £4,700, a Feedmaster tub feed wagon sold for £6,200, a Simulta seed and fertiliser drill £5,000, a Fraser 12 ton trailer realised £4,150, and a Taarup 832 bale shredder and Atkinson lime spreader £2,000 each.
Alan Hutcheon, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ deputy general manager commented: “This is a fantastic start to the year - this was one of the busiest January Sales we have seen.
“Machinery and vehicles in particular made excellent prices and this perhaps shows that buyers are keen to purchase quality second hand machinery in place of new machines in these difficult financial times.”

High Demand For Single Farm Payment Entitlements At Sale
There was strong demand for lots at the second of Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ series of Single Farm Payment entitlements sales at Thainstone Centre on Friday (January 30).
A total of 509.98 units were sold with a top multiplier of 3.4. Top price was £1,500 per unit for a lot valued at € 623.140, giving a multiplier of 3.0. The overall multiplier was 2.9 at the standard agricultural payment conversion rate of 0.7903.
Set aside entitlements were also sold and all achieved a multiplier rate of 2.7 with a top price of £730 per unit.
John Gregor, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ general manager commented: “This was another buoyant sale and with keen buyer interest. In addition to those attending the sale in person, we had 34 bidders logged onto our eBid@LiveAuction online bidding system.
“As in previous years, higher value lots were in strong demand and they realised the highest multiplier rates.
