Inverurie’s Thainstone Centre was the venue for a show and sale of Suffolk prime lambs on Thursday, May 08.
The event – which attracted an entry of 43 pairs – was held in conjunction with the North East of Scotland Suffolk Sheep Club, sponsored by Towns & Carnie and Harbro and judged by former young butcher of the year Gary Raeburn, Bogie Street, Huntly.
The overall champions – a 48kg pair of pure Suffolks from Bruce Watson, The Gaval, Mintlaw realised £120 per head to judge Gary Raeburn.
Meanwhile the reserve champions were exhibited by H Stuart & Sons, Davis Hill, Udny and these 60kg pure Suffolks were bought by C Kirkpatrick, Nether Place Farm, Lockerbie for £90 per head.
Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ Colin Slessor said there was a high standard of entries on the day with some top quality lambs to the fore.
Averages were as follows:-
New season lambs (173) averaged 177.4p per kg (+5.3p) and sold to 250p per kg and £120 gross. Old season lambs (1,901) averaged 150.2p per kg (-0.4p) and sold to 169.3p per kg and £78 gross. New season SQQ up to 45.5kg (78) averaged 192.4p per kg (+10.2p). Old season SQQ up to 45.5kg (1,433) averaged 153.6p per kg (-3.2p).

Bridge of Marnoch farmer Angus Greenlaw took the top honours in a show and sale of commercial beef breeding cattle at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie yesterday (Wednesday, May 7th).
The event was held by Aberdeen & Northern Marts and sponsored by East Coast Viners Animal Nutrition. Judging the entries was Craig Hamilton of Fetterletter, Fyvie.
The overall champion outfit and winner of the East Coast Viners Perpetual Trophy and £100 was a Limousin heifer with Limousin heifer calf at foot from Sheep Park Farms, Bridge of Marnoch, Huntly. Sponsor representative Lorna Masson was on hand to present the prizes to Angus Greenlaw before the champion sold for the joint top price of the day at £2400 to Mr O. Llyr, Ruthin, North Wales.
The reserve champion from K. Stewart & Sons, Greenhaugh, Huntly was a Limousin heifer with Limousin bull calf at foot which went on to sell for £1900 to Bill Mackie, Whiteside, Tullynessle, Alford.
Also presented on the day was the Scottish Simmental Club Perpetual Trophy for the best Simmental cross heifer with calf and this was presented by secretary Richard Pettit to John Troup of Southbank, Skene. The winner was a home-bred heifer with Limousin heifer calf at foot and they fetched £2000 to J. Gordon & Co, Whiteside, Forbes, Alford.
Commenting on the sale, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ store and breeding cattle manager John Angus said: “This event saw an exceptional demand for top quality heifers with most consignors’ averages showing a significant increase on the year.”
Viewers and buyers converged on Thainstone Centre, Inverurie in their droves on Saturday (May 3rd) for Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ busiest ever sale of rare and minority breeds.
Among the features of the diverse day were sales of rare breeds of livestock, horses and ponies, and implements and handtools from a bygone era. In addition there were more than 800 lots of poultry and waterfowl – the most ever seen at the popular biannual event.
A total of 780 potential buyers registered to take part in the sale, setting another record for a Thainstone rare breeds sale.
Commenting on the event, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ general manager John Gregor said: “Our rare breeds sales are always much anticipated among our customers and viewers and this event was no exception.
“There is no doubt that the excellent selection on offer, the holiday weekend and great weather all combined to ensure that the day was very busy and hugely successful for buyers, sellers and visitors.”

Inverurie’s Thainstone Centre will be the venue for a show and sale of Suffolk prime lambs on Thursday, May 08.
The show, held in conjunction with the North East of Scotland Suffolk Sheep Club and sponsored by Towns & Carnie and Harbro, will start at 11.30am with a sale at 1pm.
On the day there will be classes for pairs as well as pure and Suffolk crosses. Prizewinners will be awarded at approximately 12.30pm in ring 3.
Judge for the event will be former young butcher of the year Gary Raeburn, of Bogie Street, Huntly
A good number of people were in attendance at Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ latest show and sale of store cattle on Wednesday, April 30.
The event was sponsored by Autoworm Economic Growth, in conjunction with Towns and Carnie, and judged by Colin Scott, Wester Biffie, Maud.
Representing Autoworm, regional manager Ian Urquhart was on hand to present the prizes on the day
The overall champion and recipient of a £100 cash prize was Murray Rainnie, Loanhead, Logie Coldstone with a 468kg May 2007-born Limousin steer which sold to judge Colin Scott, Wester Biffie, Maud for £800.
Taking the reserve champion title was a 412kg March 2007-born Limousin heifer from Leys Farm, Leys Castle, Inverness. It was also bought by judge Colin Scott for £700.
Speaking at the show and sale Mr Scott said the standard of entries was very high and that he was very pleased with his purchases.
“I was looking for good length on the animals and most of them certainly looked the part. Good confirmation is also important, and today I was impressed with what I saw,” he explained.

Pair of Bullocks – 1 D & E Smith, Mains of Inkhorn, Auchnagatt (405kg/£655); 2 J Duguid & Sons, North Cranna, Aberchirder (460kg/£680) and 3 Leys Farm, Leys Castle, Inverness (372kg/£610). Pair of Heifers – 1 Leys Farm, Leys Castle, Inverness (396kg/£630); 2 J Duguid & Sons, North Cranna, Aberchirder (418kg/£690) and 3 Leys Farm, Leys Castle, Inverness (396kg/£630).

The busy spring season will continue with a show and sale of commercial beef breeding cattle on Wednesday, May 07 at Inverurie’s Thainstone Centre. There will be approximately 400 adults, 300 heifers and 100 cows, all with spring born calves at foot at Thainstone. Trophy presentations will take place at approximately 12 noon in ring 2.
