RECORD PRICE ACHIEVED AT 2008 SPRING SHOW BULL SALE

Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ multibreed show and sale of pedigree bulls attracted top crowds to Inverurie’s Thainstone Centre on Wednesday, February 27th where a new sale record of 8,500gn was achieved.

The event was held by Aberdeen & Northern Marts as part of the 2008 Royal Northern Spring Show. Sponsored by Clydesdale Bank, it took place under the auspices of the British Charolais, Limousin, Simmental and Aberdeen-Angus cattle societies, and was judged by Mr J. Muirhead, Firhills Farm, Arbroath.

The sale leader for the third consecutive year was John Wilson, of Kinclune, Glenkindie. His 23-month-old second-prize winning Charolais, Kinclune Barker led the way in the sale, fetching a record price of 8,500gn – breaking Mr Wilson’s previous Spring Show record of 7,500gn, set in 2006.

Born in March 2006, Kinclune Barker was sired by Mr Wilson’s 14,000gn Perth purchase, Caylers Solomon, and is a brother of the previous Spring Show record holder, Kinclune Venture. It sold to J. Baxter, of Troup Farm, Gamrie, Banff.

Another of Mr Wilson’s Charolais exhibits, June-2006 born Kinclune Bruno, again by Caylers Solomon, also beat the previous record price – selling to F. G Leslie, Newton of Auchindoir, Rhynie, for 7,800gn.

Speaking at the event, show judge Jim Muirhead said there was a tremendous show of cattle to the fore on the day.

He said: “There has been an excellent showing of pedigree beef bulls at Thainstone today with great classes throughout. I am looking for good muscle definition on the animal and there were certainly plenty of top beasts here today.

“I was honoured to judge at the Spring Show as it is one of the biggest shows of its kind in Scotland and traditionally attracts cattle of the highest standard.”

Overall champion of the 2008 show and sale was Dumbrek Braveheart, a March-2006 born Limousin from D. Work & Son, Mains of Dumbrek, Udny, Ellon which was bought by L. J. George, of Shield Park, Rothiemay, Huntly, for 4,900gn.

The reserve Limousin champion, meanwhile, achieved 4,800gn and it was an April-2006 born son of Dyke Thunder, named Shannas Bandit, exhibited by Mr and Mrs J. Penny, Shannas, Clola, Peterhead. It was bought by G. Grant & Sons of Easter Gallovie, Dulnain Bridge, Grantown of Spey.

Leading the way in the Charolais classes was June-2006 born Kinclune Buster, again from John Wilson, Kinclune, Glenkindie. It fetched 5,000gn to F. D. Glass, of Mill of Fowlis, Muir of Fowlis, Alford. The reserve Charolais champion was March-2006 born Harestone Bruno from Neil Barclay, Harestone Farm, Crathes.

The top Simmental was April-2006 born Islavale Thunder which was exhibited by W. Stronach, Berryleys, Grange, Keith. It fetched 4,000gn to G. D. Wilson, of Turtory, Bridge of Marnoch, Huntly. The reserve title went to Messrs C. & M. Bruce, Tillyeve, Udny Ellon, for their May-2006 born Tillyeve Triumph which fetched 2,400gn to G. Arnott and Sons.

In the Aberdeen-Angus classes the overall championship went to Messrs C. & E. McCombie of Auchincrieve, Knock, Huntly with April- 2006 born Auchincrieve Enron which sold to A. & J. Wilson, Upper Wheedlemont, Rhynie, Huntly, for 2,200gn.

RARE SIMMENTAL CROSS TRIPLETS GO UNDER THE HAMMER AT THAINSTONE

A unique set of Simmental cross triplets went under the hammer at Thainstone’s weekly sale of store cattle last week.

The home-bred, three-year-old Simmental cross triplets from A R Mathers & Sons, Wardes, Kintore attracted a great deal of attention when they entered the ring during the Friday sale.

Farmer Iain Mathers, who has one of the largest suckler herds in the North-east said it was the first time ever he has had triplets born on the farm.

“The dam, a Charolais cross cow reared the calves herself, although they did get a little bit of extra milk in the early days,” said Mr Mathers.

The Potential buyer was offered – as a bit of fun on the day – three bottles of whisky to accompany their purchase as well as a £40 voucher from Harbro and a £40 voucher from Osmonds.

The September 2006-born steers sold to George Addison, of Clayfolds, Alvah, Banff for £685 each. He said he was pleased with the price he paid for the triplet steers and the bottles of whisky that accompanied them would allow him to celebrate in style.

Below is a picture of the triplets.

GOOD TURNOUT EXPECTED FOR ANNUAL YOUNG FARMERS’ EVENT

A total of 90 animals have been entered in Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ popular young farmers’ competition for overwintered cattle.

The 2007-08 event – which is again sponsored by Johnston Carmichael chartered accountants and business advisers – offers young farmers the chance to gain practical experience in selecting and preparing cattle for show and sale, as well as learning about the business skills that are needed to operate a successful beef finishing enterprise.

The competition – which features 64 Aberdeen & Northern Marts purchased animals and 26 homebred animals – will culminate with a show of cattle at Thainstone Centre on Thursday, March 20. The animals will then go under the hammer on Friday, March 21.

For the third year, an award for the best commercial overwintered animal – outwith the championship animals – will be contested. The winners will be decided by a points system which takes account of liveweight gain, presentation and parading, and gross margin, as well as the quality of the animal.

Commenting on the competition John Angus, Aberdeen & Northern Marts store and breeding cattle manager said: “We are very pleased that Johnston Carmichael has once again put forward such generous sponsorship for this event.

“This competition remains very popular among young farmers and always attracts entries of a very high standard.”

“As a firm we have huge expertise in the agricultural sector, and many of this year’s competitors will hopefully become our clients in the future."
