RECORD PRICES AT 2007 SCOTCH PREMIER MEAT LTD CHRISTMAS CARCASE SHOW


Prices reached a record high at the 2007 Scotch Premier Meat Ltd Christmas Carcase Show on Monday (December 3rd) with the supreme champion fetching £5,200.

The event was officially opened by Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond who took the opportunity to pay tribute to the resilience of the meat industry in Scotland.

Judges for the 2007 event, which took place at Scotch Premier Meat’s Inverurie base, were Bill Dye, Scotts Butchers, Carshalton and Alan Healy, of Aubrey Allen Ltd, Coventry.

The supreme – and first time champion – was a home bred 20-month-old Limousin cross heifer from T C Johnston, Cottown, Drumblade , Huntly which scaled 388.9kg and was sold to John Pettit of John Pettit & Sons, Grimsby.

Mr Pettit also bought the pork champion – a 58.92kg carcase consigned by Mark Strachan of Balquhain Farms, Pitcaple - for £1000.

Speaking at the event Mr Pettit said: “I was really pleased with the prices I paid considering the high standard and quality finish of the animals on show. The prices reached record levels this year and I look forward to offering my customers these quality products.”

The overall reserve champion, bought at Thainstone in February, came from Auchtydore Farms, Easterton of Lenabo, Mintlaw – and the 27-month-old, 337.5kg Charolais cross steer was bought by Aubrey Allen Ltd, Coventry, for £2,300.

Exhibiting the champion Highland Lambs was I & H Anderson, Newton of Carnousie, Forglen, Turriff and the pair – which weighed 51.9kg – sold for £600 each to Laidlaw Butchers of Aberdeen and Banchory. Meanwhile, the reserve champion pair of Highland Lambs from Ronnie Wilkie, Tillyboy, Echt, tipped the scales at 42.7kg and sold at £220 each to Charles MacLeod, of Stornoway.

The reserve pork championship went to S Mackie & Co, Balquhindachy, Methlick, for a 52.35kg offering, and was bought by Davidsons Inverurie Ltd, Inverurie for £680.

Reserve Champion - David Brown, Burnside of Dipple, Fochabers (750lb) 250p/lb to G & P Roser (Butchers), near Chepstow. 1st – D Work & Son, Mains of Dumbreck, Udny, (692lb) 165p/lb to Gaterells of Felpham, Bognor Regis.


Class 2 (Premier Bullock(s) 340.5kg to 370kg)

Champion – D Work & Son, Mains of Dumbreck, Udny (798lb) 165p/lb to Rawlings of Cranleigh, Cranleigh. Reserve Champion – James I Thomson, Middleton of Potterton (810lb) 135p/lb to Early’s, Bognor Regis. 1st - Messrs A J Geddes, Longhaugh, Bridge of Marnoch (812lb) 132p/lb to Scotts Butchers, Carshalton.


Class 3 (Premier Bullock(s) 370.5kg to 400kg)

Champion – George Ritch, East Fingask, Oldmeldrum (872lb) 150p/lb to Aubrey Allen Ltd of Coventry. Reserve Champion – J D S & D Duncan, Jacobshall, Gamrie (876lb) 135p/lb to W Morgan & Sons, Petersfield. 1st – Ian G Pirie & Co, Overton of Bruxie, Maud (874lb) 125p/lb to Falconer Family Butchers, Arbroath.


Class 4 (Premier Heifer(s) up to 320kg)

Champion – Auchtydore Farms, Easterton of Lenabo, Mintlaw (694lb) 240p/lb to G & P Roser (Butchers) near Chepstow. Reserve Champion – Ross Bros, Wardehead, Strichen (684lb) 210p/lb to K & L Cruickshank t/a G & D Sinclair, Torphins. 1st – D & V Buchan, Savoch, Longside (698lb) 230p/lb to Davidsons Inverurie Ltd, Inverurie.


Class 5 (Premier Heifer(s) 320.5kg TO 360kg)

Champion - David Brown, Burnside of Dipple, Fochabers (722lb) 220p/lb to Rawlings of Cranleigh, Cranleigh. Reserve Champion – G & M Coutts, Smiddyhill, Slains, Ellon (766lb) 200p/lb to J H Clark & Son, High Street, Princes Risborough. 1st – John Penny & Son, Shannas, Clola (744lb) 180p/lb to J H Clark & Son, High Street, Princes Risborough.


Class 6 (Premier Heifer(s) 360.5kg to 400kg)

Champion – T C Johnston, Cottown, Drumblade, Huntly (857lb) £5,200 to John Pettit & Sons, Grimsby. Reserve Champion – David Brown, Burnside of Dipple, Fochabers (817lb) 185p to All Best Cuts, Murrow Wisbech. 1st – J D S & D Duncan, Jacobshall, Gamrie (854lb) 165p/lb to Direct Meats, Colchester.


Class 7 (Two Highland Lambs up to combined weight of 39kg)

Champion – Alan Simpson, Mains of Leslie, Insch (38.7kg) £160 each to Deliserve, Rogerstone, Newport. Reserve Champion – H. Macdonald, Dalvey Mains, Advie (37kg) £140 each to Scotts Butchers, Carshalton. 1st – T Alexander, Belnagarrow, Craigellachie (37.8kg) £120 each to All Best Cuts, Murrow Wisbech.


Class 8 (Two Highland Lambs combined weight of 39.5kg and over)

Champion – I & H Anderson, Newton of Carnousie (51.9kg) £600 each to Laidlaw Butchers, Aberdeen and Banchory. Reserve Champion – Ronald Wilkie, Tillyboy, Echt (42.7kg) £220 each to Charles Macleod of Stornoway. 1st – J Gordon, Wellheads, Huntly (40.4kg) £200 each to W Morgan & Sons, Petersfield.


Class 9 (Light pork)

Champion – M Strachan, Balquhain Farms, Pitcaple (58.92kg) £1000 to John Pettit & Sons, Grimsby. Reserve Champion - S Mackie & Co, Balquhindachy (52.35kg) £680 to Davidsons Inverurie Ltd, Inverurie. 1st – D A & E M Skinner, Lazyfold, Insch (56.47kg) £280 to Presly & Co, Market Square, Oldmeldrum.
