SUFFOLK AND TEXEL TO THE FORE IN SECOND RAM EVENT

Suffolks and Texels were to the fore during Aberdeen & Northern Marts' second show and sale of rams at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on Wednesday (October 31).

The Towns & Carnie-sponsored event attracted a large number of entries which were judged by Bryden Nicholson of Garth, Mossbank, Shetland.

Suffolk champion - and recipient of the Charles A. McDonald Perpetual Trophy - was A J & A Benzie, Meikle, Whiterashes, Turriff with a ram lamb which sold for £280 to the judge.

The reserve champion for the Suffolk breed was a ram lamb from G L Stuart, Milltown of Birness, Ellon which sold for £300 to G Troup, Shaggart, Sauchen.

In the Texel classes, the overall champion also came from G L Stuart, Milltown of Birness, Ellon which sold for £220 to A& C Taylor, Coldwells, Craigston, Turriff.

The reserve champion for the Texel breed came from G Gordon, The Haugh Farm, Ballindalloch and was bought by Messrs B J Smith & Sons, Knockhourin, Knockando, Aberlour for £420.

Other leading prices included a Texel shearling at £380 from B Buchan, Clinterty, New Aberdour who also sold a Texel ram lamb at £260.

Charolllais shearlings peaked at £300 for an entry from H Davies, Hillhead of Cannahars, Whitecairns.

A Llyen shearling from W & N Lawrence, Blackpots, Auchnagatt, realised a top prize for the breed of £270.

THAINSTONE CENTRE PRODUCES TWO CHAMPIONS DURING SHOWS AND SALES

Aberdeen & Northern Marts produced two cattle champions during shows and sales at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on Friday (October 19th).



In the show and sale of weaned and suckled calves judged by James B. Smith, Auchnavaird, Auchnagatt the overall champion was a 458kg Charolais from G. & D. Anderson, Brucewells, Netherley which realised £720 to Sandy Hay, Mains of Cultmalundie, Tibbermore, Perth.



Mr Hay was also the buyer of the reserve champion, a 452kg black Limousin from R. S. Duncan, Achdregnie, Glenlivet which realised £700.



David Marshall of event sponsor Charles J. Marshall (Aberdeen) Limited was on hand to present the winning consignors with their prize money and trophies.



Also taking place was a show and sale of Shetland and West Highland weaned and suckled calves, sponsored by Harbro Ltd.



Judge George Masson of Denhead, Catterline, Stonehaven chose as the best Shetland calf and overall champion a 466kg Charolais from A. G. Flaws, Ringesta, Quendale, Shetland which realised £700 to Blair Duffton, Bogie Street, Huntly.



Meanwhile, the award of best West Highland calf went to a 274kg Charolais from J. M. Kerr, Upper Barvas, Isle of Lewis. It was also purchased by Mr Duffton, this time for £450.



Handing over the prizes was Harbro’s Julia Mathers who is shop supervisor of the company’s Thainstone branch.



Commenting on Friday’s shows and sales, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ store and breeding cattle manager John Angus said: “These excellent shows of cattle met a large ringside of buyers and first-class demand.”

MORE THAN 900 PRESENT FOR ANNUAL SHOWS AND SALES


More than 900 MV accredited sheep were at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on Monday (October 15th) for the annual shows and sales.

Sponsored by Harbro with support from Intervet, manufacturers of Heptavac P+, Ovivac P+, Enzovax and Toxovax, the event drew exhibitors and buyers from throughout Scotland.

The overall Suffolk champion, chosen by judge Brian Anderson from Shetland, was a ram lamb from Bryden Nicolson, Garth House, Mossbank, Shetland. This January 2007-born son of Glenho Gurkha fetched the top price of the breed’s sale at £1,800 to R. H. Wilson, North Dorlaithers, Turriff, helping take Mr Nicolson’s Innfield flock average to £363.57 for 14 ram lambs sold.

The reserve Suffolk was a shearling ram from J. T. Wilson, Barnyards, Mintlaw with Mr Wilson finishing on an average of £356 for five shearling rams sold.

Selling for £600 was the second prize winning shearling ram from C. A. Proctor & Co, Mains of Tollo, Turriff. It was purchased by A. J. Murdoch, Braal, Halkirk.

In the Texel class overall Texel champion came from the Clinterty flock of Brian Buchan, Clinterty, New Aberdour and it was a ram lamb by Clinterty Las Vegas which fetched 750gn to Gill, Rinaiten, Glenrinnes, Dufftown. Mr Buchan’s flock average closed at £297.50 for six shearling rams and £443.62 for four ram lambs.

The reserve champion was Knock Nirvana, a ram lamb from the Knock flock of Messrs A. & G. Howie, West Knock, Stuartfield, Peterhead. It was bought by P. Anderson, Grunnafirth, Brettabister, Shetland for 700gn. The Knock flock average ended at £315 for ten ram lambs whilst a shearling ram fetched £525.

Judging the Border Leicester show was William Blackhall, Bogfon, Maryculter, Aberdeen and his overall champion was a March 2007-born ram lamb by Stonecroft Star from Jimmy Douglas, Woodhead, Cairness, Fraserburgh. It was bought by George Wordie, Mains of Cairnborrow, Glass, Huntly who paid £280.

Mr Douglas was also the exhibitor of the reserve champion Border Leicester and this time the March 2007-born ram lamb, also by Stonecroft Star, sold for the top price of the sale at £500.

In the classes for Bluefaced Leicesters, judge Jim Simmons from Ruthven Farms, Tomintoul chose as champion a shearling ram from W. G. Low, West Mains, Nethermuir. Buyer James Cowe, Little Howes, Holm, Orkney paid the breed’s top price of the day (500gn) for the champion.

Meanwhile Jim Simmons was the buyer at 300gn of the overall reserve champion, another shearling ram this time from Robert Neill, Broadleys, Dunning, Perth.

The Charollais show saw judge Ronnie Wilkie award the overall championship and reserve championship to Howard Davies, Hillhead of Cannahars, Whitecairns, Aberdeen. The champion was a January 2006-born shearling ram by Parkgate Freeman. It was bought by I. Cooper & Partners, Backhill of Thornton, Bourtie, Inverurie for 380gn.

Mr Davies’ reserve champion was Cannahars Hector, a December 2006-born ram lamb by Logie Durno Eastern Promise which fetched 400gn, also to I. Cooper & Partners. Mr Davies’ Cannahars flock ended the day with averages of £241.50 for eight shearling rams and £210.75 for 14 ram lambs.

Continental champion was a Rouge De L’Ouest shearling ram called Bennachie Five Star by Magnerabeg Colin from Mr and Mrs R. Imlah, Wood Cottages, Kingseat, Newmachar. R. & W. Keir, Kinbattoch, Glenkindie were the buyers at 260gn.




SHETLAND PONIES SELL TO 2,300GN AT 43RD ANNUAL SHOW AND SALE


Registered pedigree Shetland ponies sold to a top price of 2,300gn at the Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ successful 43rd annual show and sale at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie.

The event took the form of an evening show judged by Tony Jones (standard section) and Audrey Jones, Plas Gwyn, Llangefni, Anglesey, Gwynedd, Wales on Sunday (October 7th) and a sale on Monday (October 8th). Held in conjunction with the Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society, the popular annual event attracted an entry of more than 240 ponies.

In the standard section, the overall champion was Millhouse Exel, a black stallion by Stow Review from Angus Howie, Millhouse, Dunning, Perthshire and it was unsold.

The reserve standard champion – a black stallion called Wells Tarquin from H. P. Sleigh & Son, St John’s Wells, Fyvie, Turriff – sold for the second highest price of the auction at 2,000gn and was purchased by T. G. Hughes, Mynydd, Llandegai, Bangor, Wales.

Top price of the day (2,300gn) was paid by Angus Howie for a black mare named Millhouse Vienna which was exhibited by Mr J. Farrell, Cochno Stud, West Cochno, Hardgate, Dunbartonshire.

Other leading prices included
1,500gn which was paid twice for black fillies, firstly Schivas Kerry from Mrs S. M. Burnett, Ythanview Cottage, Ythanbank, Ellon which was bought by Mr J. Waters, Lowerhalstock Farm, Okehampton, Devon and, secondly, for Wells Trona from H. P. Sleigh & Son and was purchased by A. Page, South Godstone, Surrey.

Next highest at 1,400gn was the overall reserve in the miniature section for ponies under 34 inches. The winner of this award was Tanzivan Tai-Antonias, a 32-inch palomino stallion exhibited by David Reid, Denburn Livery and Stud, Denhead of Gloghill Farm, Kingswells, Aberdeen and bought by A. & S. G. Butterfield of Barnsley.

The miniature champion was the 33.5 inches Zig-Zag of Brindister, a chestnut stallion from James Stewart, Kingswells, Aberdeen which sold for 320gn to Anne Irvine and Cecily Payne, Kininvie, Blackford, Rothienorman, Inverurie.

Commenting on the event, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ Philip Reid said: “Buyers from a wide radius, including mainland Europe, helped ensure a successful sale where eight ponies sold for four-figure sums.”

ORKNEY AND GLENLIVET PROVIDE CHAMPIONS FOR CATTLE SHOWS

Orkney and Glenlivet provided the champions during two shows and sales at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie yesterday (Tuesday, October 9th).

The resumption of livestock sales after a shutdown due to the recent Foot and Mouth Disease problems in Surrey saw Aberdeen & Northern Marts host two separate events on the same day.

At the show and sale of Aberdeen-Angus and Aberdeen-Angus cross store cattle – sponsored by the breed society and judged by Alan Hasting from Beoch, Stranraer – the overall champion was a 648kg 22-month-old steer from I. Craigie & Co, Hall of Clestrain, Orphir, Orkney. It was bought by Harry Emslie, Brae of Coynach, Mintlaw for £910.

The reserve champion was a 620kg 19-month-old steer by Galcantray Mr Joss from F. J. Ross & Co, Wester Arr Farm, Nairn which fetched £745 to Backmuir Trading, Keith.

Messrs Ross were also the winners of a set of four engraved whisky glasses for the best pen of four steers. These weighed an average of 564kg each and sold for £720 each, also to Backmuir Trading.

North East Aberdeen-Angus Club chairman Charles McCombie was on hand to present the prizes.

Meanwhile, Ledingham Chalmers LLP were the sponsors of a show and sale of weaned and suckled calves which was judged by brothers Alexander and John Middler, Daies, Wardhouse, Insch.

Their champion heifer and overall champion, winning the Manson Perpetual Trophy and the Ledingham Chalmers Perpetual Trophy, was a 482kg 13-month-old Charolais from D. & R. Durno & Sons, Auchorachan, Glenlivet. It was bought by F. Walker & Co, Culfork, Alford for £685.

And the judges were the buyers, at £670, of the overall champion steer and recipient of the Smiley Perpetual Trophy. It was a 482kg a 10-month-old Limousin from J. Stuart, Belnoe, Chapeltown, Glenlivet.

This Friday (October 12th) will see Aberdeen & Northern Marts host a show and sale of 800 weaned and suckled calves, sponsored by Gray Feed Services. The show, to be judged by Scott Watson of Balhousie, Carnoustie will begin at 9am and the sale will take place from 10am.

The presentation of prizes will be held at 12noon.

SHETLAND PONIES SELL TO 2,300GN AT 43RD ANNUAL SHOW AND SALE

Registered pedigree Shetland ponies sold to a top price of 2,300gn at the Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ successful 43rd annual show and sale at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie.

The event took the form of an evening show judged by Tony Jones (standard section) and Audrey Jones, Plas Gwyn, Llangefni, Anglesey, Gwynedd, Wales on Sunday (October 7th) and a sale on Monday (October 8th). Held in conjunction with the Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society, the popular annual event attracted an entry of more than 240 ponies.

In the standard section, the overall champion was Millhouse Exel, a black stallion by Stow Review from Angus Howie, Millhouse, Dunning, Perthshire and it was unsold.

The reserve standard champion – a black stallion called Wells Tarquin from H. P. Sleigh & Son, St John’s Wells, Fyvie, Turriff – sold for the second highest price of the auction at 2,000gn and was purchased by T. G. Hughes, Mynydd, Llandegai, Bangor, Wales.

Top price of the day (2,300gn) was paid by Angus Howie for a black mare named Millhouse Vienna which was exhibited by Mr J. Farrell, Cochno Stud, West Cochno, Hardgate, Dunbartonshire.

Other leading prices included 1,500gn which was paid twice for black fillies, firstly Schivas Kerry from Mrs S. M. Burnett, Ythanview Cottage, Ythanbank, Ellon which was bought by Mr J. Waters, Lowerhalstock Farm, Okehampton, Devon and, secondly, for Wells Trona from H. P. Sleigh & Son and was purchased by A. Page, South Godstone, Surrey.

Next highest at 1,400gn was the overall reserve in the miniature section for ponies under 34 inches. The winner of this award was Tanzivan Tai-Antonias, a 32-inch palomino stallion exhibited by David Reid, Denburn Livery and Stud, Denhead of Gloghill Farm, Kingswells, Aberdeen and bought by A. & S. G. Butterfield of Barnsley.

The miniature champion was the 33.5 inches Zig-Zag of Brindister, a chestnut stallion from James Stewart, Kingswells, Aberdeen which sold for 320gn to Anne Irvine and Cecily Payne, Kininvie, Blackford, Rothienorman, Inverurie.

Commenting on the event, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ Philip Reid said: “Buyers from a wide radius, including mainland Europe, helped ensure a successful sale where eight ponies sold for four-figure sums.”

PLANS FORGE AHEAD FOR MAJOR ANNUAL RAM SALES

Aberdeen & Northern Marts are forging ahead with plans for major annual ram sales at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on Monday, October 15th.

More than 900 have been entered for the annual shows and sales of MV accredited sheep sponsored by Harbro with support from Intervet, manufacturers of Heptavac P+, Ovivac P+, Enzovax and Toxovax.

Kicking off a busy day at 8am is a show of 414 Suffolks. It will be judged by Brian Anderson, Seafield, Lerwick, Shetland and will be followed by the breed’s sale at 10am.

From 8.30am, 43 Border Leicesters will be judged by William Blackhall, Bogfon, Maryculter, Aberdeen followed by the show of 41 Blue Faced Leicesters judged by Jim Simmons, Ruthven Farms, Tomintoul.

The sale will then begin at 10am, starting with the Border Leicesters.

At 10am, a show of 330 Texels will be judged by Robert Marshall, Glenrinnes Farms Ltd, Dufftown and they will go under the hammer at 1pm.

Also beginning at 10am will be the judging of 63 Charollais entries and a line-up of Continentals featuring nine Rouge, 15 Beltex and six Zwartble and this will be carried out by Ron Wilkie. Tillyboy, Echt. These will be sold from 11am.

INCREASED ENTRY FOR 43RD ANNUAL SHOW AND SALE

An increased entry of 245 registered pedigree Shetland ponies will be at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie for Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ 43rd annual show and sale.

The event on Sunday (October 7th) and Monday (October 8th) is again being held in conjunction with the Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society.

The show will take place in Thainstone EXCHANGE from 6.30pm on Sunday, with the entries to be judged by Welsh husband and wife team Mr T. A. Jones (standard ponies) and Mrs C. A. Jones (miniature ponies) from Anglesey, Gwynedd.

Among the array of prizes up for grabs will be the St John’s Wells Cup presented by the Sleigh Family to the champion standard pony, and the North of Scotland Shetland Pony Group Perpetual Trophy for the champion miniature pony.

Monday will begin with a sale of harness, models, stud books, etc. at 9am with the sale of Shetland ponies to commence at 10am. Also beginning at 10am is a show of Highland ponies which will take place in Thainstone EXCHANGE. These, and the non-registered Shetland ponies and other horses and ponies, will then be sold immediately after the registered Shetland ponies. Champions and reserve champions will go under the hammer at 12noon.

Commenting on the event, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ general manager John Gregor said: “Whilst horses are not a Foot and Mouth Disease susceptible species, anyone travelling from premises where there is farm livestock is reminded of the importance of adherence to biosecurity guidelines, particularly clean livestock vehicles in addition to clean clothing and robust footwear capable of being cleansed and disinfected.”
