27th September 2006 - Ground-breaking export move for Aberdeenshire-based auction company

Beef cows bound for the Republic of Ireland left Scotland for the first time in more than a decade today (Wednesday, September 27th).

Export restrictions were implemented in the early 1990s but, after six weeks of negotiations with SEERAD, DEFRA, the State Veterinary Service and DARD, Thainstone Centre-based Aberdeen & Northern Marts have recently secured the export of cows to the Republic of Ireland for slaughter.

Arrangements for this inuaugural trade involved adherence to stringent European, UK and Irish legislation including EU Intra-Community Trade for cattle for slaughter rules, and traceability requirements on both sides of the Irish Sea. In addition were strict disease control regulations stipulating that all animals for export must come from holdings which have been completely free of diseases such as TB and Brucellosis for at least the last six months.

Commenting on the ground-breaking consignment, ANM Group Ltd chief executive Brian Pack: “The costs incurred during the past six weeks should be well spent for the industry in that we expect to see a strengthening of cast cow prices in the future in line with those prevailing in the Republic of Ireland.

Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ general manager John Gregor added that it had been a most frustrating time as the issues – all appearing fairly minor – were batted between the agencies involved. He added: “However, I would pay tribute to the concerted effort by many at SEERAD to achieve the outcome and to Andy Robertson of the NFUS for his eleventh hour intervention.

“In the end it was very much a team effort between Dublin, London and Edinburgh and we believe that this paves the way for a regular trade which will be particularly important as farrow cow numbers rise in the autumn as calves are weaned.”

Mr Gregor went on to say: “We have amended our cattle movement forms to take cognisance of animals being exported for slaughter, and I would appeal to our customers to declare the eligibility of animals in order to enable the trade to develop.

“It is a very straight-forward process for our customers and will be a very easy route for the vast majority of people. Our staff are on hand to help too, with advice and guidance available on a variety of issues including transport arrangements for smaller consignments from remote areas.”

Mr Gregor also highlighted the important role Thainstone Centre currently plays in gathering and sorting beef cows from throughout the north and Northern Isles in one marketplace, and the suitability of the facilities on offer there to the export business – excellent lairage facilities provide ideal accommodation for animals arriving in advance of auctions, or awaiting export.
