| 23rd October 2006 - Annual dairy show and sale sees prices to £1250
A total of 20 animals were sold with the overall championship being
awarded by show judge Bill Christie, Ardenlea, Oldmeldrum to an
Aquila Patron Lucente Ex-sired heifer in milk from Jean C. Baird,
Mains of Culsh, New Deer which realised £1250 to Ordens Farm,
Banff. Achieving the same price to the same buyer was a heifer by Moet Lookout from David B. Abernethy, Braco Park, Rosehearty. Other leading prices for Braco Park included £1200, £1180 and £1150 for heifers in milk, and £900 for a cow in milk. Meanwhile, Mayne Farm at Elgin achieved £1200 and £1000 for heifers in milk.
Laura George of Parrock, Rothiemay lifted the overall championship
at Friday’s (October 13th) show and sale of weaned and suckled
calves.
She won the overall champion’s Atholl Lord Forbes Perpetual
Cup with a 534kg Limousin heifer which was bought for £740
by show judge Blair Duffton, Bogie Street, Huntly.
He was also the buyer of the overall reserve champion, a 428kg Charolais steer from Donald Campbell, Camaghael, Fort William which realised £820.
Kenneth and Shona Marshall of event sponsor Marshall Trailers were
on hand to present the prizes.

Suffolks and Texels were to the fore during Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ second show and sale of rams at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on Wednesday (October 11th). The Towns & Carnie-sponsored event attracted a large number of entries which were judged by Ronnie Wilkie of Tillyboy, Echt. As the Suffolk champion – and recipient of the Charles A. McDonald Perpetual Trophy – Mr Wilkie chose a ram lamb from H. Stuart & Sons, Davishill, Udny which sold for £350 to Tom Catto, Little Kirkhill, Maud. The reserve champion for the Suffolk breed was a shearling ram exhibited by C. M. & M. Bruce, Tillyeve, Udny and it was bought by S. Scott of Appiehouse, Stenness, Orkney for £300. In the Texel classes, the overall champion came from Ron Greig, South Tillydesk Ellon and his ram lamb sold for £320 to Collie (Auchmore), Easter Auchmore, Keith. The same buyer also purchased the reserve champion Texel – a ram lamb from G. L. Stuart, Milltown of Birness, Ellon – for £300. Top price in the sale was £500 which was paid by C. J. & P. Mansell, Tresta, Fetlar, Shetland for the third prize-winning Texel shearling from A. J. Rae, Mains of Orchardtown, Udny. The Bluefaced Leicester entry was led by a shearling from W. G.
Low, West Mains, Nethermuir which was purchased by G. Rouse, Little
Quoy, Burray, Orkney. The full prize list was as follows: Suffolk Shearling Ram Texel Shearling Ram Top The honours went to Keith and Orkney at Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ 11th show and sale of Aberdeen-Angus sired store cattle on Tuesday (October 10th). The event was sponsored by the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society and judged by Frank A. Smart, Easter Tolmauds, Tornaveen. Mr Smart was also on hand to make the presentations of prizes. The overall champion, and winner of the Perpetual Trophy and £100, was a steer from J. A. Law & Son, Midthird, Botriphnie, Keith which tipped the scales at 616kg and sold for £860 to I. & M. Emslie, Little Barras, Stonehaven. Mr Emslie was also the buyer of the reserve champion at £780 and the 458kg heifer was exhibited by G. M. R. & Sandison, Hindatoon Farm, Harray, Orkney. Also, from Orkney was the champion pen of four steers, this time from I. Craigie & Co, Hall of Clestrain, Orphir. Weighing an average of 472kg each, the four sold for £660 each to A. Fowlie, Adziel, Strichen. Commenting on the show and sale, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’
store and breeding cattle manager Allan Taylor said: “Steers
were an excellent show while heifers were slightly plainer but all
classes realised far more than expected.” The full prize-list was as follows: Single steer Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ 42nd annual show and sale
of registered pedigree Shetland ponies has been hailed a success. Held in conjunction with the Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society, the
event took place at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on Sunday (October
8) and Monday (October 9) and attracted an entry of more than 240
from around the UK and from as far afield as Holland. In the standard section, the overall champion was Wells Special
Edition – a home-bred black stallion from H. P. Sleigh &
Son, St John’s Wells, Fyvie, Turriff. It sold for the joint
top price of the day at 2000gn to D. Elliot, Smallburns Farm, Carr
Shields, Hexham. Also selling for 2,000gn was the black mare Threapwood Velia from
Mr and Mrs G. C. Wright, Ivy Cottage Farm, Threapwood, Cheadle,
Staffordshire. She was bought by J. Tonkinson, Millhaugh, Sandness,
Shetland. Other leading prices included 1,500gn for the piebald stallion
Strathlene Quadrille from Mrs E. M. Mitchell, Mains of Findochty,
Buckie which was bought by M. Geven, Haarsteeg, Holland. Selling
at 1,000gn to Hugh Robertson, Drumrosssie House, Insch was Rockfire
Casanova, a 32 inches chestnut stallion from Mrs A. Hancock, Trinity
Place, Coweleton. The reserve standard championship also went to a home-bred pony,
this time to a black mare named Kinkell Gael from Mrs J. Barry,
Upper Braefindon, Culbokie, near Dingwall. It was bought by standard
pony judge Mandy Sargeant, Champlers Farm, Hawkley, Liss, Hants
for 350gn. In the miniature classes, the overall championship went to the
33.5 inches Zig-Zag of Brindister, a chestnut stallion from Mrs
J. R. Stewart, West Kingsford, Kingswells, Aberdeen which was unsold
at 1,700gn. The reserve champion miniature pony was from W. & K. Campbell,
Midcalder, Thurso and the 21 inches Midcalder Lady Jane was bought
by Wendy Morris, Carmarthen, Wales for 800gn. This year’s miniature pony judge was Léonie Sellar
from Cheshire, who also judged Shetland ponies at the 2006 Royal
Highland Show. She runs the Dryknowl Stud where there are 26 standard,
mostly black, ponies. She was faced with large turnouts in both
foal classes and said that the top placed ponies in all classes
stood out from the start. She added: “The champion was exceptional
and the sort of animal I would be happy to use on my mares.” Also taking place on Monday was a show and sale of Highland ponies.
Judged by Hugh Duncan, Craignetherty, Turriff, the champion –
and winner of the Archibald Cup – was a May 2006-born grey
colt foal, Knockandy Drum Major. Exhibited by E. L. Cowie, Home
Farm, Leith-hall, Kennethmont, Huntly, the champion was sired by
Moss-side Lairig Ghru and out of Bogs Marilla by Trademark of Whitefield.
It sold for 700gn to Mr and Mrs Allan, Hilldykes, Millbrex, Fyvie. Meanwhile achieving 1,700gn to Mark Maher, Midstrath Equi World
Club, Ballogie, Aboyne was the chestnut cross gelding Craigmancie
Arni from Fiona Menzies, Myreton Farm, Insch. Commenting on the shows and sales, Philip Reid of Aberdeen &
Northern Marts said: “With an increased number of Scandinavian
and other European buyers present, quality ponies were easily sold.” The full Shetland pony prize-list was as follows: Standard Classes

premier two-day winter farming event. 6th October 2006 - Huntly farmers lead the way at show and sale Bridge of Marnoch’s Billy Stewart took home the overall championship
at Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ show and sale of commercial
beef breeding cattle on Tuesday (October 3rd). The event took place at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie and saw Mr
Stewart – who farms at Greenfold – win the overall championship
with a Simmental heifer with Limousin heifer calf at foot. The champion’s
Aberdeen & Northern Marts Perpetual Trophy and £100 were
presented by Heather Cameron of show sponsor Cassie & Co chartered
accountants. Mr Stewart’s champion unit also received the British Simmental
Cattle Society Ltd’s Perpetual Challenge Trophy for the champion
Simmental-sired heifer with calf at foot. This was presented by
Fiona Sloan of the Society before the winners went on to sell for
£1,500 to Kincraigie Farms, East Kincraigie, Lumphanan. And it was Billy’s brother Keith Stewart of Greenhaugh who
lifted the reserve championship and recorded the top price of the
day with a Belgian Blue heifer with Limousin bull calf at foot.
They were bought by D. Dalgetty, Cabrich, Kirkhill, Inverness for

2006 - Top prize to Argyll in show and sale Winning the C. A. Coutts Perpetual Trophy for the champion steer and the overall championship was a Charolais cross steer from Gordon Cameron, Newton Cottage, Acharacle. It tipped the scales at 494kg and sold for £800 to A. Douglas, Crimonmogate Farms, Lonmay. Meanwhile, the winner of the Aberdeen & Northern Marts Perpetual
Trophy for the champion heifer was a 488kg Charolais cross from
John Junor, Dell Farm, Farr which realised £740 to Tony Thompson
from Thirsk. Single Steer – 1 G. Cameron, Newton Cottage, Acharacle (494kg,
£800); 2 G. & D. Anderson, Brucewells, Netherley (458kg, £920);
3 J. Junor, Dell Farm, Farr (538kg, £740). Pair of Steers – 1 D. & R. Durno & Sons, Auchorachan,
Glenlivet (486kg, £700); 2 J. Junor, Dell Farm, Farr (433kg, £680);
