Thainstone hosts annual shows and sales of rams

Two days of ram shows and sales - sponsored by Harbro Ltd - took place at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on Monday (September 26th) and Tuesday (September 27th).

Monday's show and sale of Suffolks attracted an entry of more than 400 judged by husband and wife team Willie and Annie Hutchon, Maulcastle, Lockerbie who have enjoyed a successful year on the summer show circuit, including exhibiting the supreme champion Suffolk at this year's Highland Show.

A steady trade saw the final average reach £270.57 for 294 ram lambs and the championship go to a January 2005-born twin ram lamb by Muiresk Fletcher from the "Templand" flock of last year's reserve champion exhibitors, K. Gill & Co, Easter Templand, Fortrose. The sale of the champion at £750 to J. D. Lyon, Lower Wanford, Banff helped the "Templand" flock average reach the top average of £385 for six ram lambs.

Henry Stuart & Sons of Davishill, Udny exhibited the champion pen of five, one of which went on to be named overall reserve champion. Sired by Kings Romeo, the reserve champion was bought by Messrs J. J. Gordon of Wellheads, Huntly for £500 taking the final average for the "Davishill" flock to £366.42 for 28.

Two Suffolks achieved the breeds' top price of £1,000 - one from Bryden Nicolson, Garth Farm, Mossbank, Shetland which will return to Shetland with buyer R. Ramsay, South Collafirth, Ollaberry. The other was exhibited by Jimmy Douglas, Woodhead, Cairness, Fraserburgh and was bought by Welshman Allan Williams.

Experienced breeder Mr Douglas also enjoyed a successful outing at Tuesday's show and sale of Border Leicesters, showing the overall champion for the breed. And his ram lamb by Clola Highlander sold for the second highest price (£500) to judge John Barrowman of North Knockglass, Stranraer.

These successes saw Mr Douglas's Suffolk flock average £310.55 for 18 and his Border Leicesters finish at £194 for ten.

Fraserburgh also produced the reserve champion Border Leicester, this time from John Bell and Sally Guild's well known "Knowsie" flock. Their ram lamb by Clola Lanark Champion was bought by Fiona Anderson, Francis Street, Wick for £400 whilst another from John and Sally, by the same sire, achieved the breed's highest price of the day at £550 to Mrs I. M. Duncan, Knowehead, Insch.

The "Knowsie" flock average was £343.63 for 11 ram lambs while the overall average for the Border Leicesters was £115.45 for 11 shearling rams and £194.31 for 51 ram lambs.

More than 430 Texels were forward and judge for the show was Harry Emslie junior of Kinknockie, Mintlaw whose champion was "Deveronvale Lenox," a ram lamb by Craighead Hercules from Graham Morrison of Inchbruich Farm, Cornhill, Banff which fetched 900gn - the second highest price - to D. W. Sinclair & Co, Unigarth, Sandwick, Stromness, Orkney.

The reserve was "Haddo Lionheart" - a ram lamb by Claybury Kruger from William Knox's "Haddo" flock at Fyvie. It realised 800gn to Mrs S. Macdougall, Flichity Mains, Farr, Inverness.

Achieving the top price for Texels at 1,200gn was Fordafourie Legacy, a son of Tophill Joe from A. C. Lee & Co, Feurdies, Memsie, Fraserburgh. It was purchased by Orkney buyer J. D. & M. M. Leitch, Feolquoy, Evie. This helped the "Fordafourie" flock average reach £427 for six while the breed's overall average was £342.83 for 86 Texel shearling rams and £274.23 for 153 ram lambs.

A large turnout was present for the Charollais classes and exhibiting the champion was H. E. G. Davies, Hillhead of Cannahars, Whitecairns whose son of Logie Durno Eastern Promise sold at 400gn to judge Alex Little of Little Daugh, Huntly.

Glenrinnes Farms Ltd of Dufftown paid the top price of 550gn for the first prize shearling ram "Crichney E-Type" from last year's judge Frieda Brownlie of I. & F. Brownlie.

The championship for any other continental breed saw the "Aviemore" Beltex flock run by Turriff's Doreen Mair take the championship with ram lamb "Aviemore Juke Box" (450gn) and the reserve championship with shearling ram "Aviemore Hardy" which topped the sale at 550gn to J. Mackay, Home Farm, Aberlour.

Commenting on the shows and sales, Aberdeen & Northern Marts' prime, store and breeding sheep manager Colin Slessor said: "Whilst quality rams were keenly bid for, flock averages saw a drop mainly due to a poorer enquiry for secondary types."

Call for Young Farmers to get involved

Prospective participants in this year's overwintering competition are being asked to start thinking about their entries in the 2005-06 young farmers' competition.

Sponsored by Johnston Carmichael chartered accountants and business advisers and run by the Young Farmers in conjunction with Aberdeen & Northern Marts, the annual competition gives young farmers practical experience in the selection and preparation of cattle for show and sale.

It also provides the opportunity for participants to learn the business skills necessary to operate a successful beef finishing enterprise and features a novice award for exhibitors aged between 14 and 18.

In addition, this year sees the inclusion of a new award for the best commercial overwintered animal, outwith the championship animals. The winner will be decided by a points system taking into account the quality of the animal, liveweight gain and gross margin.

Commenting on the launch of the 2005-06 competition, Johnston Carmichael chief executive Patrick Machray said: "Johnston Carmichael are delighted to continue to be involved in this event, particularly because the structure of this year's competition accurately reflects the business realities facing our young farmers."

John Angus of Aberdeen & Northern Marts added: "We are very pleased that Johnston Carmichael have again put forward such generous sponsorship for this competition, and we hope that as many young farmers as possible will be encouraged to take part in this year's event.

"The inclusion of the new award will, we hope, recognise more of the hard work involved in the process from buying through to exhibiting and selling, and highlighting the importance of the commercial aspects as well as the quality of the animals."

Participants have until the end of November to select store cattle or weaned calves purchased at any Aberdeen & Northern Marts autumn sale, or home-bred animals, to take part in the overwintering competition.

The winner of the 2004-05 competition and recipient of the Johnston Carmichael Perpetual Trophy and Quaich, was Ian Thomson of Middleton of Potterton, Whitecairns, Balmedie with a March 2004-born 570kg Limousin cross steer which was bought for the sale's top price of £1,700 by Wattie Ritchie, Tamala, Burnside.
