New sponsor for summer show and sale

Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ summer show and sale of store cattle and weaned calves will take place at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on Friday (July 22nd).

Over 1,000 cattle will be forward for sale on the day, and the entry will include 300 from Orkney and Caithness.

The event will be judged by Stewart Walker of Culfork, Alford and will feature classes for singles and pairs. In addition, the consignor of the overall champion animal will receive £100 and £50 will go to the reserve champion.

Sponsoring the show and sale will be Turriff Agri Parts Ltd who recently opened retail premises in Thainstone Centre to compliment the company’s base at Turriff. The firm – which celebrated 25 years in business in 2004 – stocks 9,000 lines including a wide range of spares for tilling, forage and harvesting equipment.

“Our unit at Thainstone Centre is doing well and everything is going according to plan,” commented Turriff Agri Parts Ltd owner George Mearns. “This is the first time we have sponsored a show and sale at Thainstone and we are delighted to be associated with Aberdeen & Northern Marts.”

The show will begin at 8.30am and the sale will commence at 10am. The presentation of prizes will take place in sale ring two at 12noon.

Spectacular judges announced

Aberdeen & Northern Marts is delighted to announce the judges for this year’s Spectacular, which will take place at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on August 30th and 31st.

The prestigious event is sponsored by Clydesdale Bank and offers a total prize-fund of more than £3,300. It is widely regarded as one of the country’s top exhibition commercial cattle events and last year attracted an entry of more than 120 calves and store cattle suitable for further showing.

This year’s show will be judged by Richard Naylor, Sandyline Farm, Kirk Langley, Derby (steers) and Harry Emslie, Kinknockie, Mintlaw (heifers) in Thainstone EXCHANGE from 6pm on Tuesday, August 30th.

The sale on Wednesday, August 31st will be conducted by Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ store and breeding cattle manager Allan Taylor and will commence at 10am. Mr Taylor commented: “The Spectacular has become a very popular fixture on our busy calendar of events, and we look forward to welcoming a large turnout of high quality show cattle.”

The 2004 Spectacular included the official opening of Thainstone Centre’s multi-purpose venue Thainstone EXCHANGE and the overall title was won for the second successive year by Andrew Anderson of Smallburn Farms Ltd, Smallburn, Rothes. His champion was the 475kg November 2003-born Limousin cross “Bobo Balde” sired by Salomon and the win rounded off a very successful year for the home-bred steer, which recorded four successes in four outings at last year’s summer shows – supreme championships at New Deer, Nairn and Grantown shows and reserve overall supreme champion at Black Isle.
