STORE CATTLE - FULL REPORT

THAINSTONE, Aberdeen and Northern Marts (1st May) sold 2563 store cattle and 53 weaned calves.

Bullocks (1307) averaged 190.7p (-3.5p) to 262.8p per kg for a pair of 292kg Charolais from Kingcausie, Maryculter and £1270 gross for a 814kg Charolais cross from Lower Cushiestown, Meikle Wartle.
Heifers (1203) averaged 180.4p (-4.2p) to 332p per kg and £1320 gross for a 398kg Limousin cross from Housebay Farms, Stronsay.
Bulls (53) averaged 160p (-13.9p) to 247.5p per kg for a 198kg Aberdeen Angus from Horndoyne, Oyne and £850 gross for a 550kg Charolais from Birkenbower, Lumsden.
Weaned calves (53) averaged £510 per head and £660 gross.

"Quality cattle still met an excellent demand with a more commercial show forward".

Bullocks sold to a top of 229p per kg for a pen of 327kg Charolais crosses from Norville, Norby and £1070 gross for a pair of 700kg Aberdeen Angus crosses from Bay, Stronsay.

Heifers sold to a top of 332p per kg for a 398kg Limousin crosses which realised £1320 gross from Housebay Farms, Stronsay

Fodder
Overall Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 820 bales.  Inside barley straw sold to £6.80 per bale to average £5.20. Hay sold to £12 per bale to average £11.10.  Silage sold to £10 per bale to average £9.40. Turnips sold at £13.50 per tonne to average £12.

Store lambs (158) to £95 for Texels from Blelack, Dinnet.
Island lambs (31) to £80.50 for Charollais from Muce, Birsay.
Ewes with lambs (1359) to £54.50 for Mules with lamb and a half from Roundhome, Corse.
Feeding ewes and Rams (784) averaged £58.57 (-£2.34) to £101 for a Suffolk ram from Mains of Slains, Collieston.

“Ewes with lambs at foot were a mixed entry and were short of buyers requirements.  Feeding ewes slightly cheaper on the week”.
