THAINSTONE, Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 1,429 store cattle and seven young calves.


Bullocks (800) averaged 145.5p (-0.3p) to 218.4p per kg for a 348kg Charolais from Tullo of Gravock, Laurencekirk and £1,100 gross for a 790kg Simmental cross from Mill of Auchintoul, Aberchirder.

Heifers (614) averaged 140.3p (-2.2p) to 189.7p per kg for a 348kg BB cross from West Wardmill, Drumoak and £900 gross for a 520kg Limousin from Clashnoir, Auchnarrow, Glenlivet.

Bulls (15) averaged 126.2p (-5.9p) to 157.1p per kg for a pen of three 280kg Charolais from Portstown, Inverurie and £635 gross for a 470kg Charolais from Exnaboe, Virkie.

Young calves (seven) averaged £153 per head and £245 gross.

In the Cydectin sponsored show and sale of store cattle judged by Mr Euan Fettes, Braes of Enzie, Clochan, Overall champion was a home bred Charolais cross 536kg Heifer shown by Messers G and D Anderson, Brucewells, Netherley which realised £980. Reserve Champion was a home bred 512kg Charolaise cross Heifer from Mr G Hendry, Heads of Auchinderran, Aultmore, Keith which sold at £930, both to Mr A C Brown, Reidhall Farms, Edzell.

Store lambs (1,063) to £73 for Texels from Poolharry Cottage, Hatton. Ewe lambs (85) to £70 for Continentals from Newton of Balquhain, Pitcaple. Island lambs (39) to £51 for Suffolk crosses from Bigton Farm, Bigton. Grit ewes (210) to £74 for whole-mouthed Texels from Heatherybanks, Turriff. Ewes and lambs (64) to £32.50 for Suffolk whole-mouth with single lamb from Edgarsglen, Cuminestown. Feeding ewes (1,233) averaged £54.04 (+£1.84) to £102 for Suffolks from Gaval, Fetterangus.
