ORKNEY AND GLENLIVET PROVIDE CHAMPIONS FOR CATTLE SHOWS

Orkney and Glenlivet provided the champions during two shows and sales at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie yesterday (Tuesday, October 9th).

The resumption of livestock sales after a shutdown due to the recent Foot and Mouth Disease problems in Surrey saw Aberdeen & Northern Marts host two separate events on the same day.

At the show and sale of Aberdeen-Angus and Aberdeen-Angus cross store cattle – sponsored by the breed society and judged by Alan Hasting from Beoch, Stranraer – the overall champion was a 648kg 22-month-old steer from I. Craigie & Co, Hall of Clestrain, Orphir, Orkney. It was bought by Harry Emslie, Brae of Coynach, Mintlaw for £910.

The reserve champion was a 620kg 19-month-old steer by Galcantray Mr Joss from F. J. Ross & Co, Wester Arr Farm, Nairn which fetched £745 to Backmuir Trading, Keith.

Messrs Ross were also the winners of a set of four engraved whisky glasses for the best pen of four steers. These weighed an average of 564kg each and sold for £720 each, also to Backmuir Trading.

North East Aberdeen-Angus Club chairman Charles McCombie was on hand to present the prizes.

Meanwhile, Ledingham Chalmers LLP were the sponsors of a show and sale of weaned and suckled calves which was judged by brothers Alexander and John Middler, Daies, Wardhouse, Insch.

Their champion heifer and overall champion, winning the Manson Perpetual Trophy and the Ledingham Chalmers Perpetual Trophy, was a 482kg 13-month-old Charolais from D. & R. Durno & Sons, Auchorachan, Glenlivet. It was bought by F. Walker & Co, Culfork, Alford for £685.

And the judges were the buyers, at £670, of the overall champion steer and recipient of the Smiley Perpetual Trophy. It was a 482kg a 10-month-old Limousin from J. Stuart, Belnoe, Chapeltown, Glenlivet.

This Friday (October 12th) will see Aberdeen & Northern Marts host a show and sale of 800 weaned and suckled calves, sponsored by Gray Feed Services. The show, to be judged by Scott Watson of Balhousie, Carnoustie will begin at 9am and the sale will take place from 10am.

The presentation of prizes will be held at 12noon.
